Ride-sharing companies Uber and GrabCar would be subjected to the same rules as conventional taxi firms, said Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz on the legalisation of e-hailing services that will be done when the Cabinet meets next week.

The tourism and culture minister said it was the cabinet’s decision to allow for Uber, GrabCar and taxis to have the same terms and a level playing field.

Under the new policy, ride-sharing drivers would need to be registered as well as obtain a public service vehicle license and accident coverage insurance.

Their cars will also be examined for roadworthiness by Puspakom, the main inspection body for commercial vehicles in the country.

Putrajaya’s move to allow Uber and Grab to legally offer rides to passengers is seen as an attempt to liberalise the country’s transport policy.

Taxi drivers are up in arms with the move as they deem ride-sharing services a threat to their income, while the public and tourists fancy ride-sharing services for their fixed pricing and service.
