Thousands of Malaysians earning more than RM10,000 a month have applied for the 1Malaysia People’s Aid or BR1M scheme, revealed the Finance Ministry.

According to Second Finance Minister Johari Abdul Ghani, about 300,000 Malaysians earning more than RM5,000 applied for BR1M yearly and his ministry also found that 260,000 applicants earned RM5,000 a month.

“About 40,000 applicants earn between RM6,000 and RM8,000 a month,” he told a press conference on Thursday.

Under the 2017 scheme, RM1,200 is being given to 3,242,048 households earning RM3,000 and less a month, while RM900 is being given to 291,918 households earning between RM3,001 and RM4,000 a month, and RM450 is being given to 2,786,803 individuals earning below RM2,000 a month.

Johari said his ministry and the Inland Revenue Board and the Employees’ Provident Fund will work together to ensure the money does not go to the wrong people.

“We have come to realise that we channel a lot of money to non-targeted groups, and this in turn prevents us from giving the money to the targeted groups,” he added.
