{"id":30302,"date":"2017-06-23T11:07:10","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T03:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.imoney.my\/articles\/?p=30302"},"modified":"2017-06-23T11:07:10","modified_gmt":"2017-06-23T03:07:10","slug":"locals-exempted-tourism-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.imoney.my\/articles\/locals-exempted-tourism-tax","title":{"rendered":"Locals May Be Exempted From Paying Tourism Tax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Malaysians may not need to pay the new tourism tax if they stay at three-star hotels and below, said Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are certain categories of people, such as locals, staying at three-star hotels and below who may be exempted. We are studying this and will be making an announcement soon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imoney.my\/articles\/tourism-tax-malaysia\" target=\"_blank\">new tourism tax<\/a> would be managed by the Customs Department, with its existing system in play with regard to the classification of hotels.<\/p>\n<p>Effective July 1, hotel guests will be charged the tax between RM2.50 and RM20 for one night stay, depending on the type of hotel.<\/p>\n<p>The lowest tax rate of RM2.50 per night will be applicable for non-rated hotels while RM5 for two-star, RM10 for three-star, RM15 for four-star and RM20 for five-star hotels.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, the taxes collected would be used to promote Malaysia overseas and refurbish tourism facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming 60% occupancy rate at over 11 million hotel rooms in the country, the new tax is expected to bring in RM654.62 million in revenue for the country.<\/p>\n<p><em>[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2017\/06\/21\/govt-may-exempt-locals-from-paying-tourism-tax-at-3-star-and-below-hotels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Source<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Possibly for hotels rated 3-star and below!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9,"featured_media":30303,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[256,216,215,231],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-30302","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-lifestyle","category-news-updates","category-tax","category-travel"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.5 -
