The Malaysian labour force rose to 15million last year, which was a 2% increase compared to 14.7million in 2016 following data revealed by the Labour Force Survey Report 2017.

The report, which was released by the Department of Statistics, also gave insight into the labour force participating rate (LFPR) which increased by 68% last year compared to 67.7% in 2016.

Chief Statistician Malaysia Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the female LFPR rose 0.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) to 54.7% last year, while the male LFPR dropped by 0.1% y-o-y to 80.1%.

“Overall, the male LFPR was still higher than female labour force participation rate for all age groups.

“Among the active unemployed persons, 45.1% secured employment in less than three months,” he added.

Meanwhile, the department also stated the unemployment rate remained at 3.4% over the last two years consecutively. This shows the country’s economy was still operating at full employment.
