It is one of those things that most people take for granted until something goes wrong.<\/p>\n
When you are planning for that long-awaited vacation or finalising a busy business trip, the last thing you want to think about is whether something bad will happen. However, most Malaysians still regard travel insurance as optional.<\/p>\n
Research shows that forty per cent of people only purchase it as an afterthought and at the very last minute while a local online survey conducted last year revealed that only 34.8% of Malaysians purchase it.<\/p>\n
According to the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM), these are some key features of travel insurance products <\/a>that you need to know.<\/p>\n Death and permanent disablement:<\/strong> You are normally covered for death and total permanent disablement for a period within 365 days after the occurrence of the accident. The compensation will be paid according to a scale of benefits and may differ from one insurance company to another.<\/p>\n Loss of luggage:<\/strong> This covers accidental loss or damage to your baggage, clothing, personal effects, and even money, caused by the carrier.<\/p>\n Loss of passport and money:<\/strong> You will be reimbursed for additional hotel charges, travel and other expenses incurred in the country you visited, while obtaining the replacement of a lost passport. Such loss must be reported to the police within 24 hours.<\/p>\n Hospitalization and medical expenses.<\/strong> Covers hospitalization, hospital or surgical expenses, outpatient medical expenses, as well as daily allowances up to a maximum number of days, if you are hospitalized for more than 24 hours.<\/p>\n Repatriation.<\/strong> In the event of accidental death of the insured, the insurer will reimburse the insured\u2019s legal representative for the cost of returning the remains home.<\/p>\n Curtailment.<\/strong> You will be reimbursed for expenses incurred due to loss of travel or accommodation expenses paid due to cancellation or curtailment of the journey.<\/p>\n Hijacking.<\/strong> The insurer may make daily payments up to a specified maximum number of days, if your journey is interrupted for more than 12 hours due to an act of hijack.<\/p>\n Travel insurance products normally does not include coverage of pandemic-related risk but with international borders gradually opening up, many countries now require travellers to have travel insurance that cover the medical expenses related to Covid-29.<\/p>\n Travel insurance for tourists visiting Malaysia.<\/strong> While Malaysians are not required to buy travel insurance for travelling within the country, the government has made it compulsory for non-Malaysians who travel to Malaysia to have Covid-19 travel insurance coverage<\/a>.<\/p>\n SOPs for Malaysians travelling to Singapore<\/strong>. Malaysians are required to purchase travel insurance with a minimum coverage of S$30,000 for COVID-19-related medical treatment and hospitalisation costs in Singapore, before applying to travel to Singapore using the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL)<\/a>.
