Often it feels like I\u2019m living my life only within these four walls, and everything else has moved online. Unreal.<\/p>\n<p>Ever felt the same?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s changed the way I feel about money too.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Adventures-in-the-crypto-world\"><\/span>Adventures in the crypto world<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Recently, I tried to take part in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22310188\/nft-explainer-what-is-blockchain-crypto-art-faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NFT<\/a>\u00a0drop. A process where X number of NFTs are put up for sale on a website. There\u2019s countdown timers and all \u2014 like waiting for a Black Friday sale. When the timer hits zero, you\u2019re supposed to click the button. Your crypto wallet gets deducted, and an NFT (e.g. a picture of a cute lion) appears in your wallet later.<\/p>\n<p>At 11:00:00 p.m., I hit the button but failed. It turns out 55,000 people around the world were trying to buy 10,000 NFTs at exactly the same time. The project sold out in less than three\u00a0<em>seconds<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Nine hours later, I woke up to see the NFTs already being traded in marketplaces. Minimum price at that point was 60 SOL. Buy-in price was 1 SOL (~USD 120). Meaning technically you could have made 60x your money \u2014 turning USD 120 into USD 7,200 within a few hours.<\/p>\n<p>I estimate my failure to get the NFTs was a timing thing. Milliseconds. Maybe microseconds. The difference between me and a 60x (paper) gain was how quickly I tapped the button on my laptop.<\/p>\n<p>(p.s. There are big risks to investing\/speculating in NFTs. I can only say I jumped into it with eyes wide open and a fixed amount of capital \u2014 capital I\u2019m willing to 100% lose. Assuming you\u2019re new to crypto, please start with something \u201cboring\u201d like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mr-stingy.com\/why-believe-bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> first.)<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is-absurdity-the-new-normal\"><\/span>Is absurdity the new normal?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If an overnight 60x gain sounds absurd to you, I agree. Actually, multiple things here are absurd:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tens of thousands of strangers on the Internet trading with each other using decentralized technology.<\/li>\n<li>Non-Fungible Tokens, NFTs \u2014 despite usually being a piece of data on a blockchain + a .jpeg picture \u2014 worth thousands of dollars. Some are worth millions.<\/li>\n<li>Billions of dollars sloshing around in the NFT ecosystem.<\/li>\n<li>An 18-year-old kid somewhere probably made 10x your net worth last week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Author Arthur C. Clarke once wrote, \u201cAny sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m convinced that crypto is a magical technology. But I also know there\u2019s a huge amount of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mr-stingy.com\/remembering-2017-crypto-bull-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hype<\/a>\u00a0and speculation happening right now. Crypto legend Erik Voorhees said it best:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NFT&#39;s are the future. <\/p>\n<p>NFT&#39;s are in a massive bubble and you should know the game you&#39;re playing when buying them at wild prices. <\/p>\n<p>Both statements are true.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Erik Voorhees (@ErikVoorhees) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ErikVoorhees\/status\/1431996998333308931?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 29, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the biggest absurdity of all: Why do I get to spend all my free time dabbling in experimental crypto projects, while some people struggle to even put food on the table?<\/p>\n<p>It often feels like a game to me now. For some people, an increase to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mr-stingy.com\/levels-of-wealth-rich\/\">wealth<\/a>\u00a0is just higher numbers on a screen. For others, it\u2019s the difference between a good night\u2019s rest and going to bed cold and hungry.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I don\u2019t have the answers. But I know inequality sucks.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Digital-money-doesnt-feel-like-money\"><\/span>Digital money doesn\u2019t feel like money<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Things were weighing heavy on my conscience, so I recently donated some money away.<\/p>\n<p>Giving usually feels nice, but for some reason, this time it was different. I didn\u2019t feel anything as I hit the \u201cConfirm\u201d button. Emotionless. It didn\u2019t feel good, but it didn\u2019t hurt either.<\/p>\n<p>I guess there\u2019re a few ways you could look at this. One, maybe I\u2019m just an asshole who\u2019s giving away too little, that it doesn\u2019t even make an impact. Or maybe, this near-complete digitalization of money has taken something away from our relationship with it.<\/p>\n<p>In the last 1.5 years, I\u2019ve probably used cash fewer times than I did in a\u00a0<em>week<\/em>\u00a0before the pandemic. This, coupled with the fact that I\u2019ll never see the effects of my donation \u2014 at least not in person \u2014 makes it feel even more distant. I hope to God the money feels very real to those I\u2019m trying to help, but for me, it was just numbers on a screen going down.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have long written about how credit cards make people spend\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/credit-cards\/credit-cards-make-you-spend-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more money<\/a>. I never understood this quirk of human behavior, but it makes more sense now. The same principle probably applies to casino chips and cryptos too.<\/p>\n<p>It just doesn\u2019t feel like money anymore.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Adapting-to-the-new-world\"><\/span>Adapting to the new world<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Maybe when I can go out again, I\u2019ll feel the \u201creal\u201d effects of money more.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, here are lessons I\u2019ve learned about money that feels unreal:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You-dont-need-very-much\"><\/span>You don\u2019t need very much<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There\u2019s been little to spend on during these lockdowns. No five-star hotels or faraway flight tickets. Sometimes we get expensive meals delivered to celebrate events, but you have to admit \u2014 fine dining only works in restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Most of my time has been spent on \u201cbasic\u201d things: working, reading, and investing online. Yes, I miss the beach. But overwhelmingly, I\u2019ve realized I\u2019m okay. I\u2019m\u00a0satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s liberating realizing many of the expensive things I\u2019d gotten used to are optional.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Loved-ones-are-true-wealth\"><\/span>Loved ones are true wealth<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The few things I really miss aren\u2019t expensive from a monetary sense. They\u2019re all relationship-based.<\/p>\n<p>Visiting my\u00a0parents. Playing basketball and trash talking with my friends. Taking my wife out for a nice dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Warren Buffett once said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen you get to my age, you\u2019ll really measure your success in life by how many of the people you want to have love you actually do love you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>True for every age.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Your-relationship-with-money-cuts-both-ways\"><\/span>Your relationship with money cuts both ways<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There\u2019s upside and downside to everything. What I\u2019ve realized is I\u2019m more stoic \u2014 less emotional \u2014 than the average person. I likely have a stronger detachment to money than most.<\/p>\n<p>Does being less emotional make me a better\u00a0investor? A better poker player? I\u2019d like to think so. But not feeling the lows also means I can miss the highs.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, I\u2019m pretty sure someone who loves impulse spending gets a kick out of discovering an amazing deal. But the downside might be feeling guilty later, then ending up with credit card debt.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding your personality and relationship with money allows you to tweak your behavior \u2014 to find the right balance that works for you.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"It-doesnt-always-have-to-100-make-sense\"><\/span>It doesn\u2019t always have to 100% make sense<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In a world where novel, unprecedented things happen daily, it\u2019s worth remembering that nobody has perfect knowledge. Being comfortable with\u00a0uncertainty\u00a0\u2014 the ability to make good decisions with imperfect information \u2014 is critical.<\/p>\n<p>This requires some faith. Sure, we don\u2019t know what effects the vaccines will have on us in five years, but taking the vaccines today will at least allow us to get there.<\/p>\n<p>The most miserable people I\u2019ve seen in recent times are those who feel they need 100% certainty in everything.<\/p>\n<p>You and I are discussing NFT bubbles today, but there\u2019re still people stuck in 2017 saying Bitcoin doesn\u2019t work, because \u201cit\u2019s not backed by anything!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes, change is hard. But being a dinosaur leads to extinction.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 \u2013 \u2013<\/p>\n<p>If money feels like just numbers on a screen, congratulations. You\u2019ve already reached a privileged level of wealth.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no map for solving these first-world problems we\u2019re exploring: feeling disconnected with money; trying to make sense of this weird mix of online + physical worlds.
