{"id":53353,"date":"2024-07-10T14:00:05","date_gmt":"2024-07-10T06:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress-my-161844363.ap-southeast-1.elb.amazonaws.com\/articles\/?p=53353"},"modified":"2024-08-29T15:39:59","modified_gmt":"2024-08-29T07:39:59","slug":"buy-electric-car-malaysia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.imoney.my\/articles\/buy-electric-car-malaysia","title":{"rendered":"Should You Buy An Electric Car In Malaysia?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrids become more popular among car brands, this begs the question: Should we make the switch? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before making such a huge decision, it is always a good idea to brush up on the facts before heading to the dealership and understand if an EV is right for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Electric-vehicles-are-all-the-rage-now\"><\/span><b>Electric vehicles are all the rage now<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EVs are definitely trending and the thought of buying one must have crossed your mind &#8211; you and everybody else to be exact. It is not your imagination that you are seeing more Teslas, BYDs and even Porsche Taycans on the road this year. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ev-connection.com\/ev-sales-in-malaysia-for-first-half-of-2024-more-than-double-from-last-year-up-148-percent-year-on-year\/#:~:text=Based%20on%20official%20JPJ%20statistics,which%20was%20only%204%2C410%20vehicles.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JPJ data<\/a>, there is a 148% increase in EV sales in the first half of 2024 compared to last year. The total number may still be small at 10,664 vehicles and just 2.6% of total vehicle sales but these numbers are more than double of last year&#8217;s data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us can point out that a major benefit of electric cars is the contribution that they can make towards improving air quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With no engine, electric cars produce no carbon dioxide emissions when driving. This is the key point about electric cars and their role in reducing air pollution, even after taking into consideration the power generation required to keep the vehicle running.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Environment-is-not-the-only-factor\"><\/span><b>Environment is not the only factor<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite playing your part in helping to reduce pollution, owning an EV might not be the right choice for you. It is important to understand that everyone has their own circumstances that may or may not benefit from the purchasing of an EV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should you know?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4>Production of EVs create more carbon emissions<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One could argue that the production of electric vehicles actually creates more carbon emissions. On one hand, this is somewhat true, as the manufacturing of the lithium ion batteries that are essential to EVs generates high amounts of emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This manufacturing process itself accounts for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theicct.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/EV-life-cycle-GHG_ICCT-Briefing_09022018_vF.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than a third<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the CO2 emissions within the lifetime of a single vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, research conducted by the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/publications\/electric-vehicles-from-life-cycle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Energy Agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has revealed that even with electricity generation, the carbon emissions of an electric car are around 17 \u2013 30% lower than driving a petrol or diesel car.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4>Long way to go in recycling EV batteries<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More research and studies into the use of recycled batteries are also being conducted in order to increase the viability of EVs as an alternative to fossil fuel cars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it should be noted that battery recycling is still somewhat<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energymonitor.ai\/sectors\/transport\/as-ev-sales-are-rising-recyclers-are-getting-ready-for-spent-batteries#:~:text=While%20large%20volumes%20of%20EV,use%20in%20new%20EV%20batteries.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prohibitively expensive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and will certainly take some time before it becomes more affordable.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4>EV vs petrol vehicles<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most obvious difference between electric vehicles and regular cars is the environmental impact it causes as a result of carbon emissions. One of the reasons for this is the complete absence of a fossil fuel engine in EVs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, it is even more environmentally friendly compared to hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles which still use fossil fuel engines alongside their electric batteries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It does seem like EVs are the way of the future. With <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/news\/2023-03-countries-phasing-internal-combustion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many countries<\/a> such as the European Union, China, India and even Singapore already swearing to ban gasoline cars <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the next 10 to 20 years to combat carbon emissions, it will only be a matter of time before other nations catch up and follow suit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is-it-worth-getting-an-electric-vehicle-in-Malaysia\"><\/span><b>Is it worth getting an electric vehicle in Malaysia?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with all things, there are many things to consider before deciding to purchase an EV. These vehicles have the potential to do good for our environment, but there might also be some valid reasons as to why you would not want to purchase one right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key factors you should consider:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>1. Reduce carbon emissions<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned previously, EVs might play a key role in helping to reduce carbon emissions.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/climate-change-global-temperature#:~:text=According%20to%20NOAA's%202021%20Annual,more%20than%20twice%20that%20rate.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data gathered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the years has shown us undeniable proof that climate change is a real threat that is slowly getting worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the population grows, more and more vehicles are being put on the road, and gasoline vehicles are one of the major contributors to carbon emissions that adversely affect the climate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The environmental benefits alone make this new technology worth considering at least.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>2. Efficient cost for distance<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are worried that an EVs battery won\u2019t be able to get you much distance, then you might be in for a surprise. While you definitely won\u2019t be travelling as far as a car with a full tank of fuel, EVs on a full battery can cover quite some distance at an affordable price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the Perodua Myvi for example. According to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.perodua.com.my\/our-models\/myvi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Myvi has a fuel consumption of about 21.1km per litre with eco driving on with a 1.5L engine, totalling about 760km on a full tank. Based on recent<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imoney.my\/articles\/latest-petrol-prices-malaysia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">petrol price updates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a full tank would cost you around RM73.80 for RON 95.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, let&#8217;s take the latest model of the BYD Atto 3 as an example. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/byd.simedarbymotors.my\/models\/byd-atto-3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BYD\u2019s website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Atto 3 has a maximum power of 150kw and a range of up to 480km NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) range at full charge. With a nominal battery capacity of about 62.0 kWh, a full charge would cost somewhere around RM36 to RM40.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cost savings become immediately apparent when comparing the differences between an EV and ICE engine. And this is before taking into consideration the engine horsepower differences between the two.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>3. Limited charging stations<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, it is not all rainbows and sunshine when it comes to owning an EV. Places such as China and Europe are far ahead in the EV game, having already built a robust EV infrastructure with plenty of charging stations to put their owners\u2019 minds at ease. Compared to them, Malaysia is still at entry level, they we have made good progress in improving EV infrastructure<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, it is a harder task for Malaysians to find a charging station. If you live in the major cities like KL, Johor Bahru or Penang, it should be easy enough to find a nearby mall with EV chargers. However, you will need to be prepared and make sure you fully charge your vehicle before long distance travelling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not to say that we are completely lacking in charging stations. According to the Malaysia Electric Vehicle Charging Network (MEVnet), there are approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planmalaysia.gov.my\/mevnet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2,124 EV charging stations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though it should be noted that it does take quite some time to charge a EV car battery. Depending on the remaining charge and the strength of the charger, topping up an EV battery can take as little as 30 minutes to as long as 12 hours!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most efficient way to guarantee that your EV won\u2019t run out of battery is to install a charge station within your own home so you can max out the battery overnight, which brings us to our next point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, research into easily <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/lbsbusinessstrategyreview\/2024\/04\/15\/the-rebirth-of-ev-battery-swapping-services-and-why-their-time-is-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swappable EV batteries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is ongoing with full implementation likely to occur in the near future. This could potentially increase EV uptake since the time and monetary cost of replacing batteries is seen as major problem by consumers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>4. High entry cost<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electric vehicles are not cheap. Sure, buying an electric vehicle is an efficient way to help the environment. The fact remains that it\u2019s not\u00a0 within the reach of the masses yet with prices starting above RM100,000. This does not include the cost of installing a charging station at home which can run into several thousand ringgit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the price point is getting closer to the mid-range petrol vehicles in the market. Let&#8217;s take the BYD Atto 3 as an example once more. The car currently costs around RM149,800. That puts it in the same range as many other mid-range petrol SUV cars in Malaysia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, there may be more savings from reduced maintenance costs as an EV has fewer moving parts compared to those with combustible engines. The biggest savings will come when the government removes the blanket petrol subsidy which can easily triple your petrol budget monthly!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, an EV still remains largely out of the reach of the masses whose car budget is below RM100,000 or less. This is one of the reasons why Malaysians rather choose to get a petrol car because it is more affordable compared to EVs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>5. Enjoy tax incentives<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, the government has introduced some tax incentives in order to encourage more Malaysians to take the plunge into EVs. As of 1 January 2022, EV producers can benefit from a variety of tax exemptions, including on imports, excise, and sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, consumers can claim tax relief for owning an EV as part of the government\u2019s efforts to lower the cost of adoption of zero-emission vehicles. \u00a0All-electric vehicles (EVs) registered in Malaysia are currently exempt from road tax until the end of 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Budget 2024, some of these<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aseanbriefing.com\/news\/electric-vehicles-in-malaysia-tax-incentives-for-owners-and-manufacturers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incentives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals earning RM120,000 and below annually will benefit from a scheme offering rebates of up to RM2,500 for electric motorcycles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Income tax exemptions of up to RM2,500 for investments in EV charging facilities for an additional four years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Tax rebates for EV vehicle rentals will be extended for two more years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>6. Lack of experienced car servicing<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like gasoline engine cars, EVs will require regular servicing to ensure safety and performance. Generally, EVs are relatively easier to maintain due to having fewer moving parts compared to gasoline cars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the availability of mechanics who have the skills to service EVs is another story. The EV market in Malaysia is still in its infancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, you will likely have to bring your EV to an official service centre to maintain or repair your car, at least until the rest of the market catches up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-are-the-most-affordable-EVs-in-Malaysia\"><\/span><b>What are the most affordable EVs in Malaysia?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until our local car manufacturers can come up with a viable option, the cheapest models currently available start at over RM99k.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EVS on the road that are priced under RM250k include:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.byd.com\/my\/car\/atto3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BYD Atto 3<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/byd.simedarbymotors.my\/models\/byd-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BYD Dolphin<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwm.com.my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GWM Ora Good Cat<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwm.com.my\/ORA07.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GWM Ora 07<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundai.com.my\/showroom\/kona-electric\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyundai Kona Electric<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundai.com.my\/showroom\/ioniq5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyundai IONIQ 5<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mini.my\/en_MY\/home\/range\/electric.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MINI Cooper SE 3 Door<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/neta.my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neta V<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/mgmalaysia.com\/models\/mg-4-ev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MGMalaysia<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/nissan.com.my\/nissan-leaf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nissan Leaf<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.renault.com.my\/model\/ZOE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renault Zoe<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/en_my\/modely\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer dofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tesla Model Y<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-say-you\"><\/span><b>What say you?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All in all, the initial cost of getting yourself an electric vehicle is quite high compared to a gasoline one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the bright side, the long term savings could potentially make up for it. Generally, EVs are a much more appealing option to those who do not have financial issues, just as long as they are willing to put up with the slow growth of EV infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, it all depends on your financial situation. Even if you would like to help reduce carbon emissions, you should not go to such lengths to purchase an EV if it will ruin you financially.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One could consider hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles as a decent middle ground between gasoline cars and EVs. These vehicles still require the use of fossil fuels as its battery pack is more of a supplementary feature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While EVs are still king when it comes to cutting carbon emissions, hybrids are still a better environmental option as opposed to gasoline cars.
