{"id":59068,"date":"2023-10-06T18:05:04","date_gmt":"2023-10-06T10:05:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress-my-161844363.ap-southeast-1.elb.amazonaws.com\/articles\/?p=59068"},"modified":"2023-10-06T18:05:04","modified_gmt":"2023-10-06T10:05:04","slug":"robert-kuok-100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.imoney.my\/articles\/robert-kuok-100","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia\u2019s Richest Man Celebrates 100th Birthday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tan Sri Robert Kuok, Malaysia\u2019s richest man is celebrating his 100th birthday today in style, being celebrated by a circle of elite and distinguished people celebrating his life\u2019s achievements.<\/p>\n<p>Kuok, whose full name is Robert Kuok Hock Nien was born in 1923 in Johor to Fujianese parents. His parents then migrated over to Malaysia from the Fujian province of China.<\/p>\n<p>Kuok got his first start in business, taking over his parent\u2019s shop selling rice, flour and sugar. Kuok grew the business together with his two older brothers William and Phillip. From there, the business which was then called Kuok Brothers found success, especially in sugar trading.<\/p>\n<p>Using the success he attained, he established the <a href=\"https:\/\/themalaysianreserve.com\/2021\/04\/06\/robert-kuok-public-banks-teh-see-fortunes-grow\/\">Malayan Sugar Manufacturing Co. Bhd.<\/a> and invested heavily in sugar. He hit his jackpot in 1961 when he purchased cheap sugar from India before the prices shot up.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, Kuok controlled up to 80% of the domestic sugar market, earning himself the title \u201cSugar King of Asia\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>From there Kuok branched out into multiple industries, which included commodities trading, mining, shipping, logistics, publishing and property development.<\/p>\n<p>Although Kuok has been a Hong Kong resident since the 1970\u2019s, his affection for Malaysia has never faded away.<\/p>\n<p>In a telephone interview with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asiaone.com\/malaysia\/malaysian-tycoon-keeps-himself-rooted-despite-leaving-his-hometown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Singapore Straits Times<\/a> for his 90th birthday, he said that his home will always be Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoots are roots, except that my other root is the root of my parents \u2014 and that is China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am twin-rooted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kuok\u2019s 100th birthday was marked with well wishes from many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malaymail.com\/news\/malaysia\/2023\/10\/06\/robert-kuok-celebrates-100th-birthday-with-hong-kong-elites\/94763\">business elites<\/a>, including Hong Kong&#8217;s wealthiest man,
